I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 24th instant, W. 178, and quite coincide with G: E: in the expediency of maintaining the appointment of Harbour Master and Marine Magistrate at Chusan, and I shall direct that the Salary of Mr: Skead continue to be paid until the pleasure of the Governor General be known or further instructions received from Lord Stanley.

I also quite agree with G: E: that it would, under present circumstances, create serious public inconvenience to alter the existing Govt of Hongkong by transfer of the Island to Military Authority.
